Description

I love wondering around in my woods and use any excuse I can to go outside.  I have always liked the woods. As a child my best friend and I would always camp in the woods and "live off the land".  Eating what fish we caught or small game we were able to harvest.  I guess this love of the outdoors has translated to hunting, fishing, and camping in my Adult years.  I enjoy the primitive methods of archery and have experienced making a bow or two.  I realized after making my second bow that the osage orange I use is premium quality even when compared to other woods of this type.  The back part of my property is a "forest" setting where the Osage will send out a shoot straight and fast to try to catch that small ray of sunlight coming through the hole in the canopy.  These are the best and straightest pieces of wood for making a bow.  They send a shoot up quickly, but then grow slow and hard since there is not many leaves feeding the branch.  In 2004, 2005, and 2006 I cut a few of the premium logs and notated several others that showed promise, but were too small.  15 years later I was walking my property and remembered these shoots and began to walk and look.  While some of them did not survive wind storms or grew secondary branches, a few grew into the great logs that we all dream of.  Telephone pole straight.  Little to no pin knots.  No Twist.  This is what the bowyer or primitive archer dreams about!  Here is some details about this stave:
Length: Currently this bow stave is 109 inches long.  Shipping for this length averages about 5 However if I trim it to 90 inches the average shipping drops to about   I took the picture next to my garage door to show you just how long 109 inches is.
Average Width: 2 1/2 inches
Average Depth: 3 inches
Log diameter: about 7 3/4 inches
Knots/Defects: This stave has a few wood wasp holes in the sap wood ( Only one or two barely extend into heart wood ) If done properly these could make a really awesome bow full of character, or just go a little deeper into the wood to make a traditional bow.  There is plenty of wood here for either.
Splitting method: Hand split.  This is a better method for making staves, because the bow maker can see the straightness or curve of the grain or twist if any is present.  Look closely at the pictures, because you can tell a lot by studying them
Ring Formation: Small and Tight rings near the outer log and medium rings near the center
Cutting Date: Spring 2013
Splitting Date: Feb 19 2020
Sealed: Ends were sealed the day that the log was cut and the log was allowed to air dry for almost 7 years ( Length of log was shortened on Feb 19 2020 before splitting )
Comments: This is a premium bow stave.  Very nice tight rings make it very forgiving and typically great for making a fast powerful bow.  Remember this stave is 109 inches long!, so you will be able to pick and choose what portion of the stave you want to take your bow from. This auction is for the one stave that you see pictured.  Take a look at some of the other bow staves that I have for sale this week
Thank you for taking the time to view my listing.  Please look at the other bow staves I have available at this time. Please feel free to ask any and all questions.  I do have access to a large amount of land and will be walking it from time to time looking for more premium logs or possibly pulling out some of my seasoned logs and staves to sell here.  Please contact me with requests ( Like I need some matched sets or I would like to buy a whole log ) I like to combine shipping whenever possible.  No international buyers unless pre-approved before bidding.  I recently read that another seller suggests Primitivearcher as a great site to learn about bow-making and I would agree!
